Translating Psalms (48)

A perfect meditation for Holy Week.  I’m translating it during Passiontide and it’s had a heavy effect on my mood as a result.

“Audite haec, omnes gentes” (Psalm 48)

[1] In finem, filiis Core. Psalmus.

Unto the end, for the sons of Korah.  A Psalm.

[2] Audite haec, omnes gentes; auribus percipite, omnes qui habitatis orbem :

Here these things, all nations; with your ears perceive, all who dwell on the globe;

[3] quique terrigenae et filii hominum, simul in unum dives et pauper.

whoever earth-born and sons of men, together as one rich and poor.

[4] Os meum loquetur sapientiam, et meditatio cordis mei prudentiam.

My mouth will speak wisdom and the meditation of my heart, prudence.

[5] Inclinabo in parabolam aurem meam; aperiam in psalterio propositionem meam.

I will incline into parable my ear; I will open in psaltery my statement.

[6] Cur timebo in die mala? Iniquitas calcanei mei circumdabit me.

Why will I fear on the evil day? The injustice of my heel will compass me.

[7] Qui confidunt in virtute sua, et in multitudine divitiarum suarum gloriantur,

Who trust in their own strength and in multitude of their own riches boast,

[8] frater non redimit, redimet homo : non dabit Deo placationem suam,

brother does not redeem, man will redeem; he will not give to God his appeasement,

[9] et pretium redemptionis animae suae. Et laborabit in aeternum;

and the price of the redemption of his soul.  And he will labor into the eternal;

[10] et vivet adhuc in finem.

and he will live still unto the end.

[11] Non videbit interitum, cum viderit sapientes morientes. Simul insipiens et stultus peribunt; et relinquent alienis divitias suas;

He will not see destruction, when he sees the wise dying.  At once the foolish and stupid will perish; and they will abandon to others their riches;

[12] et sepulchra eorum domus illorum in aeternum, tabernacula eorum in progenie et progenie; vocaverunt nomina sua in terris suis.

and their graves their houses into the eternal, their tents in generation and generation; they have called their names in their lands.

[13] Et homo, cum in honore esset, non intellexit. Comparatus est jumentis insipientibus, et similis factus est illis.

And man, though he be in honor, has not understood.  He is compared to foolish mules and is made like to them.

[14] Haec via illorum scandalum ipsis; et postea in ore suo complacebunt.

This way of theirs, a scandal to them; and after in their own mouth they will be pleased.

[15] Sicut oves in inferno positi sunt : mors depascet eos. Et dominabuntur eorum justi in matutino; et auxilium eorum veterascet in inferno a gloria eorum.

Just as sheep in hell are they placed; death pastures them.  And they will be master of them, will the just, in the evening; and their help will grow old in the fire from their glory.

[16] Verumtamen Deus redimet animam meam de manu inferi, cum acceperit me.

Yet still God will redeem my soul from the hand of the dead, when He receives me.

[17] Ne timueris cum dives factus fuerit homo, et cum multiplicata fuerit gloria domus ejus;

Lest you fear when rich has man been made, and when it has been multiplied, the glory of his house;

[18] quoniam, cum interierit, non sumet omnia, neque descendet cum eo gloria ejus.

for when he perishes he will not take everything, nor will descend with him his glory.

[19] Quia anima ejus in vita ipsius benedicetur; confitebitur tibi cum benefeceris ei.

Since his soul in his life will be blessed; he will confess to you when do good for him.

[20] Introibit usque in progenies patrum suorum; et usque in aeternum non videbit lumen.

He will enter even into the generations of his fathers; and even into the eternal he will not see light.

[21] Homo, cum in honore esset, non intellexit. Comparatus est jumentis insipientibus, et similis factus est illis.

Man though he be in honor, has not understood.  He is compared to foolish mules and is made like to them.
